What shoes do you like or dislike? How often do you get new shoes? Do
you break them in slowly, or do you run longer distances in them right
out of the box?
In my short time experience of 7 years of liesure running, actually shoes does not matter much as long as it fits comfortably on your legs. All that matters is strength that you develop over the period of time by following 10% rule and listening to your body. My principle is change the shoes when you are uncomfortable OR if your shoes are still OK, approx 1000 km. But with competitive running, you need to take special advice.
1000 km is 621 miles, and that is a good figure. Running literature specifies about every 500 miles or slightly more than 800 km. But, as Raju said, shoes need to fit comfortably and feel good. I've run with several different brands, and pronation from neutral to high pronation, and they all felt the same, comfortable.
When I ran marathons in my mid-40s, I didn't know about changing shoes, and I wore running shoes until they had no cushioning -- about 1200 miles. I shudder when I think about this, and I'm grateful I didn't suffer injuries from those shoes.
How do I tell when I need new shoes?
