  1. I first started running in the early 1970s, and my unofficial mentor was Dr. George (Doc) Sheehan. He stated that only newbies wore stylish running clothes, and that old-timers wore grubbies. What ever Doc said was my rule, so I wore grubbies. I still wear them. I do have a nylon jacket and a pair of nylon pants that I use as wind breakers, but layers under them are old shirts, both t-shirts and dress shirts. Even when running in New England in below zero temps (F), I've never had problems with my legs getting cold, so I don't layer my legs. I do, though, wear "boxer" shorts, so I get an extra layer on my upper quads.
